Does being on medication affect therapy?

It is quite common for people seeking counseling from a Psychologist to be taking medication such as anti-depressants.  You need to advise your psychologist of any prescribed medications you are taking, to ensure they are familiar with how these may affect you.  There are rare occasions where particular medications can cause problems with psychological therapy, and in these cases your psychologist (with your permission) can liaise with your GP or Psychiatrist to determine the best treatment options for you.

Do I need a referral?

No, anyone is able to seek treatment from a Psychologist.  Referrals are only necessary where you are intending to claim a Medicare rebate.

What is the average number of sessions clients require?

According to Black Dog Institute the average number of sessions required is usually between 6-16 depending on the type of therapy you receive.  It is important to note, this will be different for every person depending on the severity and complexity of your condition.  Long-term problems also tend to require a lengthier course of treatment.

All appointments run for a duration of 50 minutes.

What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

Both psychologists and psychiatrists work in the area of mental health.  Both psychologists and psychiatrists use various forms of therapies.  Whilst psychologists will generally focus on immediate and practical strategies, psychiatrists are qualified to treat patients with acute symptoms which require and/or include medical interventions such as prescribed medications as well as being able to admit patients to hospitals and care facilities.

What is the difference between a Psychologist and Counselor?

A psychologist has completed a minimum 4 year degree followed by an additional 2 years of supervised training.  They are trained to focus on behavioral aspects of mental health problems and are required to be registered with APHRA.  They are also required to abide by a strict code of ethics as outlined by the APS.   Meanwhile, a counselor does not require a degree or professional training and they are not regulated in Australia.
